Bob Schulz
Times Union
How, in your
7/13 editorial ‘Extreme politics’, could you
ridicule Bob Schulz as “railing on and on about the
supposed evils of government” in one paragraph while
acknowledging he “helped influence state government to
change its ways” in another? How could he be at once a
“constructive critic of government” when he warned
about “New York state’s disgraceful practices” and
a “freak show” crackpot for starting his hunger
strike over the IRS?
Are there no
good people who criticize government actions from time
to time? Indeed, is that not a duty of the citizenry?
Your often-silly staff cartoonist is paid for it. Were
those who criticized the 18th Amendment
(Prohibition) engaged in a ‘freak show’ any more
than those who dare question the 16th Amendment or those
who want new Amendments? Are not most Supreme Court
arguments based on critique of the government or the
Constitution – one side has one position and the other
an opposite? Why are those made by Mr. Schulz mere
“stunts”?
How is it
that wanting debate in America is now considered
extreme? Bombs are extreme.
It is my
understanding that the average taxpayer now works nearly
half the time to fund the government. What is so
ennobling about extreme taxation or the government? Mr.
Schulz wants to ask. We should all ask.
Perhaps your
editorials should point out disgraceful government
practices more often. There is abundance at all levels.
That would be both ennobling and socially useful.
